PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Kokborok at Rajarshi College of Education and Skill is the primary academic department dedicated to the study, teaching, research, and preservation of the Kokborok language (also known as Tripuri). Kokborok is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Bodo-Garo sub-group of the greater Sino-Tibetan family. It is mainly spoken in Tripura and recognized as an official language of the state since 1979. The department focuses on language, literature, linguistics, and cultural aspects of Kokborok and the indigenous Tripuri communities.
COURSES OFFERED
The Department of Kokborok offers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Kokborok Major and Minor as per NEP 2020 / FYUGP. This programme provides a comprehensive study of the Kokborok language, its rich literature, linguistics, folklore, and cultural heritage. Students explore the origin, development, and structure of Kokborok language along with its literary traditions spanning poetry, drama, fiction, and oral literature. Through critical reading, analysis, and discussion, students gain deep insights into the socio-cultural history of the Tripuri people, indigenous knowledge systems, language preservation, and contemporary issues related to tribal languages and identity. Hands-on activities such as language documentation, fieldwork, translation projects, and folklore collection enhance students’ linguistic competence, creative expression, and research skills. The programme emphasizes proficiency in Kokborok language (speaking, reading, and writing), critical thinking, cultural awareness, and ethical understanding of indigenous communities. ELIGIBILITY FOR A STUDENT TO GET ADMISSION
A candidate opting for Kokborok as Major subject in the B.A. Programme must have passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) examination or its equivalent from a recognized board. Preference will be given to candidates who have studied Kokborok as a subject at the qualifying examination (10+2 level).
