Department Of Chemistry
Course offered: Major, Minor & Interdisciplinary Course in Chemistry.
Eligibility:
1. H.S. (+2) passed or equivalent degree with one elective subject, Chemistry, for admission in Major course and Minor course also in Chemistry.
2. Only H.S. (+2) passed or equivalent degree for Interdisciplinary Course in Chemistry.
Departmental Profile:
Chemistry is often called the “central science” because it connects all the physical sciences at both the fundamental and applied levels. It is the study of atoms, molecules, structure and bonding, chemical reactions, and the properties of natural and man-made matter. It helps students learn about the Earth, food, materials, the human body, energy, and more.
Chemistry is important in our civilization because our basic needs like food, clothing, health, energy, air, water, and soil are affected by it. Chemistry is used extensively in daily life, such as in food digestion, ingredients for cooking, soap, and different materials for construction, fuel, etc.
The most famous chemists are Dmitri Mendeleev, Marie Curie, Joseph Priestley, Louis Pasteur, Friedrich Wöhler, John Dalton, and Lavoisier (considered the father of chemistry by many scholars).
Career prospects:
A 3-year Bachelor’s degree and 4-year Bachelor’s with Research degree will be acquired in Chemistry with Major, Minor & Interdisciplinary Course. After completing this degree in Chemistry:
1. If you want to do M.Sc. in Chemistry in India’s top institutes (i.e., IITs, NITs, & other top universities), then you can apply for the JAM Exam.
2. If you are interested in Chemistry, get the degree and go from there. I found that it was the basis for all of the jobs since I could understand the chemistry and explain it to all levels of management.
3. You can pursue a career in fields such as Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical & Drug Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry, Environmental Science, Food Science, Plastic Science, Rubber Science, M.Tech in Chemical Engineering & B.Pharm, etc.
4. You can consider working in Research and Development (Molecular Genetics, Molecular Biology, Nanotechnology, Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Design, Green Chemistry & Quality Control) for a Ph.D. or Teaching.
5. Chemistry Majors develop a wide range of skills that are valuable to employers.
6. If you want to do a government job, there are several competitive exams like TPSC, TRBT Exams, UPSC, Indian Navy, CDSE, AFCAT, ICS, IAS, Banking, etc.
7. If you want to do a private job, you can work as a chemist in different companies/industries (almost all companies require a chemist for their laboratory), such as ONGC, NEEPCO, GAIL, SAIL, etc.
